Jewish Cemeteries in Leiden
All Jewish cemeteries in Leiden were near the current-day de Valk mill and Matzevos (gravestone) we’re still visible until around 2010.
Like most cemeteries in Leiden, the Jewish cemeteries we’re based near one of the cities gates named the Rijnsburgerpoort, as the road eventually leads to a village called Rijnsburg. The gate was destroyed in 1867.
Areas around gates we’re called a “Bolwerk” which means bulwark / fortification. There we’re five such areas in Leiden that had a cemetery.
The area around the Rijnsburgerpoort was called “Het Blauwe Bolwerk”,
lit. the Blue Bulwark. The city gates always included a bridge crossing the cannel, this gate had no canal later on as many canals were filled up (see images below).
